A proposal for the creation of a very large inland fresh-water wetland in central Botswana. Makgadikgadi pan

Dear Sir

I am a consulting mechanical engineer working for myself based in Johannesburg.

The climate of Botswana has steadily become drier and river courses changed resulting in the disappearance of a large inland lake and wetland about 200 years ago leaving us with the Makgadikgadi Pan

Botswana owns a portion of the Zambezi River at Kazangula.

With some clever civil engineering, a canal and tunnel system, carefully controlled volumes of fresh water can be channeled into the Makgadikgadi from Kazangula, supplementing the existing small inflow to the pan and creating an enormous, permanent lake system.

This lake will be about 150km wide and 180km long with an average depth of about 5m. About 135 teraliters of water.

The elevations appear to be correct and, using the kinetic energy of the water from the Zambezi we should be able to introduce an average of 3000m3 per second into the Makgadikgadi Pan.

I would like to email some preliminary sketches I have produced which will explain how this can be done; but I need the name and email address of a senior Botswana Leader to whom I can email this information.

But this all needs to be studied from all angles in detail before any decisions can be taken.
To this end, I would like to make an appointment with you or your delegate to give you a presentation on the the concept and how we can proceed with it. 2hours will probably be required.

How I intend to achieve fresh water instead of saline will be dealt with in my presentation.

The advantages of all this water to Botswana, her people, her ecology and climate will be enormous.

The UN report in Jan 2010 discussed the problems surrounding the creation of national parks on indigenous peoples’ land, and highlighted the 2006 ruling by the Botswana High Court that the 2002 eviction of the Bushmen from their ancestral lands in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) was unlawful.

President Khama said the Bushmen way of life was an archaic fantasy last year, despite his and my ancestors living like that happily one time generations ago. Yet his persecution of the Bushmen is itself nothing short of similar to how European colonists treated Native Americans one time.
